E3C Presents: Tax Tips for Freelancers and Self-Employed with Haley Mitchell of Upstart Consulting

When: Wednesday, February 21st

Time: 6:30-8:30pm

Where: Volta Labs, 1505 Barrington Street, Halifax (7th floor)

Cost: Free (but seating is limited)

Navigating taxes can be tough, especially when you’re working for yourself! What items do creatives forget to deduct? How do you even register to be a bonified business when starting up? What’s the difference between a bookkeeper and an accountant? E3C is pleased to provide the guidance of Haley Mitchell of Upstart Consulting to help you steer the course.

In this engaging 1 hour presentation, Haley will help demystify some of the most common tax topics specific to the creative and start-up industries such as:

  • when to register for GST/HST
  • expenses and how to track them
  • information on registering your business name
  • the difference between being an employee and being self-employed
  • the role of a bookkeeper or accountant in helping you stay on top of it all
  • open Q & A for your specific questions

This talk is ideal for anyone currently freelancing, or considering starting their own business. Refreshments and snacks will be provided, so you can mingle with fellow attendees afterwards. It wouldn’t be an E3C event without it!

About the Presenter

Haley Mitchell is a Certified Professional Bookkeeper with over 10 years’ experience working in accounting and tax. Since opening her business, Upstart Consulting, she has focused on clients working in the creative market and start-ups.

Art Bash photo collage

Art Bash 2018 Photo Gallery

On Friday, January 26th, E3C celebrated 6 years in the creative community with the first “Art Bash”.  Held at the The Dart Gallery, this party entertained and fed over 40 people on a cold winter night. There was a group art show as well as the Draw Brawl: a live drawing competition with contestants competing for prizes.

We want to deeply thank Shannon Dawn Ellis for the photography.

Art supply drive items

4th Annual Art Drive For Elementary Students A Huge Success!

On Thursday, December 14, we gathered at The Foggy Goggle to celebrate our annual charity art drive event. Our mission: to gather as many new art supplies for the Grade 6 students at St Joseph McKay Elementary school.

Friends, you are AMAZING!

People came with armloads of stuff and we found our table (and hearts!) were full before the event even officially began at 7pm. Among some of the first to arrive was Calum Johnston of Strange Adventures Comics and Curiosities. He dropped of a tote bag chock-full of comics and learning guides for the kids. We also had anonymous cash donations; and the bag we purchased to store things in literally burst at the seams. We actually needed five bags (and a cab) to get it all home.

On Tuesday, December 19th, E3C steering members Liz Mac and Rob Cameron drove the goodies down to the school where they were received with much excitement by the staff and Principal. The supplies have gone directly to their art classes while the cash has been assigned to their Breakfast Program.

To everyone that made a donation, big or small, we sincerely thank you. To those who could not donate but sent words of love, we thank you. To those who missed this year, we’ll see you next year, and we thank you! You have ensured that at least one child will get the encouragement they need to build a lifelong love of art.

Here is a break down of what was donated/purchased:

  • 50 x sketch books
  • 2 x 96 pack crayons
  • 30 x 24 pack crayons
  • 25 x various marker packs
  • 2 x 100 pack coloured pencils
  • 19 x various coloured pencil packs
  • 8 x various drawing pens
  • 3 x conte packs
  • 1 x watercolour painting set
  • 1 x acrylic painting set
  • 1 x paint pallet
  • 10 x various paint brushes
  • 2 x colouring books
  • 1 x etching set
  • 4 x stacks of coloured paper
  • 26 x various books on comics/art/illustration
  • An assortment of various office/craft supplies (glue sticks, pencils, pens, erasers, etc)
  • $100 cash donation ($410 total donations, ~300 used on extra supplies and more art books)

From all of us to all of you, Happy Holidays!

4th Annual Art Drive

Date: Thurs, Dec 14
Time: 7pm-late
Location: The Foggy Goggle Pub

With the longer nights and colder temperatures, it’s about time we all got together for some good food and good times, eh?

For a *FOURTH* year we shall be collecting donations for St Joseph A McKay school in North end Halifax! This school services a small community of less-advantaged children. We want to make this year’s the largest before we shift to a new donation target next year!

This year we are sponsoring the school’s Grade 6 classes specifically. That means we are looking for:

  • Sketching pencils
  • Drawing paper/sketchbooks
  • Markers
  • Crayons
  • “How to draw..” books
  • Whatever YOU wish you had when you were 11 and just getting excited about creating!

You can read about our 2014 and 2015 drives as well (we were having so much fun last year we forgot to write about it!).

Spread the word by sharing the poster, or RSVP to the event on Facebook.
